What is Trauma and how does it affect you?
Trauma is a response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event. It can be physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual. Trauma can occur in anyone, at any time. It’s not always caused by a major event like a car accident or natural disaster – it can also be the result of smaller events that have a big impact, such as bullying, domestic violence or childhood abuse.
Trauma can have a range of short- and long-term effects. In the short term, you may feel shocked, confused, overwhelmed or numb. You may find it hard to cope with day-to-day life and have trouble sleeping, eating or concentrating. You may also start to avoid people or places that remind you of the trauma.
In the long term, you may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression or other mental health conditions. You may also start to abuse alcohol or drugs as a way of coping.
