What is counselling?
Counselling is the process of helping individuals work through personal problems. It is facilitated by a trained professional who provides a safe and confidential space for individuals to explore difficulties they are experiencing in their lives.
The counselling relationship is based on the client sharing their thoughts, feelings and experiences within a safe environment. The counsellor listens and asks questions to allow exploration of the issues, whilst providing understanding to assist clients to work through their problems.
The purpose of counselling is to help you identify and explore your thoughts, feelings, emotions, behaviors; to identify and explore your choices and the consequences of your choices; to determine appropriate and meaningful strategies based on your individual needs so that you can confidently move forward in a direction and manner that is right for you.
Can counselling help me?
A counselling service should be a reputable organization that offers assistance during times of distress for individuals, adolescents, couples and families. Difficulties are often experienced during bereavement, relationship breakdowns, family disputes, workplace dissatisfaction, divorce, separation, unemployment or for those suffering anxiety, depression or any number of events that affect our emotions and everyday lives.
When people feel lost, alone, confused, depressed and anxious, stressed, angry and frustrated or even fearful, they may benefit from speaking with a professional counselor.
When we do not know how to handle certain emotions or situations, we may feel helpless and stuck. A counsellor can be a great support when you need help managing a crisis and stressors in your life.
